Intruder Alarm Standards, Grading and Police Response

Intruder alarms in the UK are designed and installed to the BS EN 50131 series, applied through PD 6662. The system is given a security grade (Grade 2 and Grade 3 cover most housing, council and commercial risks) and an environmental class, with alarm transmission specified to BS EN 50136.

Police response is not automatic. It depends on a Unique Reference Number issued under the National Police Chiefs’ Council policy, and it can be withdrawn after repeated false alarms. That makes confirmed-alarm technology and proper false-alarm management a compliance issue, not just a convenience.

1. What grade of intruder alarm do we need?

Most housing, council and commercial sites need Grade 2 or Grade 3, but the grade is set by your risk assessment and your insurer’s requirements under PD 6662. We assess the risk, confirm the insurer’s conditions, and specify to match: there is no benefit in paying for a higher grade than the risk warrants, or the exposure of a lower one.

2. Why did our alarm lose police response?

Police response is tied to a Unique Reference Number that can be withdrawn after repeated false alarms under NPCC policy. The fix is confirmed-alarm technology and proper maintenance to drive false activations down. We can review your false-alarm history and reinstate a reliable response.

3. Does an intruder alarm need certification?

For police response and most insurance cover, yes. The system needs to be installed to PD 6662 / BS EN 50131 by an NSI- or SSAIB-recognised installer, with proper certification. We provide the documentation your insurer and the police require.
