Ark Fire Protection, in partnership with Bowmer + Kirkland, delivered a large-scale site stand down in Manchester to highlight the escalating mental health crisis within the UK construction industry.
On Friday 14 November, more than 250 workers across the Bowmer + Kirkland’s Echo Street site, in Manchester, paused work for a site-wide stand down. The initiative was designed as a deliberate interruption to raise awareness of the mental health pressures facing construction workers and to encourage open, honest conversation across the industry. The stand down was led by The Lighthouse Charity, the construction industry’s dedicated charity supporting emotional, physical and financial wellbeing, delivering a frank and direct talk addressing mental health, suicide prevention and the realities faced by many within the industry. The presentation focused on breaking stigma, recognising warning signs, and encouraging workers to seek help when needed.
The stand down provided space for workers to step away from daily pressures and directly address an issue that continues to impact the sector at alarming levels. Following the session everyone was encouraged to take some time out for a chat over a coffee. According to national data, an average of two construction workers die by suicide every working day in the UK. Construction workers are almost four times more likely to take their own lives than those in other industries. These figures highlight a systemic issue driven by sustained pressure, long hours, financial strain and a long-standing culture of silence around mental health.
In addition to official data, multiple industry studies and workforce surveys point to widespread mental health strain across the sector. Research conducted by organisations including the Chartered Institute of Building and Construction mental health charities suggests that: · Around three quarters of construction workers report being affected by mental health issues at some point in their careers
· More than nine in ten report experiencing work-related stress
· Over eight in ten report experiencing anxiety while at work
· Around six in ten report symptoms associated with depression
To extend the message beyond the site and into the wider industry, Bowmer + Kirkland and Ark Fire Protection illuminated the Manchester scheme’s façade over three nights.
The projection displayed three messages drawn from lived experience within construction:
· “Holding it together so no one sees the cracks.”
· “Saying they’re fine, when they’re not.”
· “Always the strong one, until they aren’t.”
The installation was designed to prompt reflection and conversation, reinforcing that mental health challenges often remain hidden on site.
The projection was delivered with the support of campaign sponsors: Bolton Steel, Wysepower, Smith Painters Ltd, Brand Access Solutions, A&B Engineering, Xsign, Richmond Furniture, Eire Facades, KWBL, S1 Roofing, Taylor Hart and Zarafa Group. The coffee and hot drinks were provided by Grounded MCR, a social enterprise which supports and trains vulnerable adults.
The stand down and projection form part of a wider commitment by Bowmer + Kirkland and Ark Fire Protection to prioritise wellbeing across their sites and supply chains. The Lighthouse Charity provides confidential 24/7 support to construction workers and their families, including counselling and emergency financial assistance.
